Global Peace Index (GPI) is a report about the peacefulness of different nations and regions in the world. Based on different indicators a report is published every year and nations are ranked accordingly.

172 independent states and territories are ranked by the Global Peace Index (GPI) according to their levels of peacefulness.

The Index was first launched in May 2009 with subsequent reports being released every year. In 2015 it ranked 165 countries up from 121 in 2007 and now 172 countries.

The GPI report is produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP). The report is developed based on the data collected and collated by the Economist Intelligence Unit, in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes.

The study was conceived by Australian technology entrepreneur and philanthropist Steve Killelea. The updated index is released each year at events in London, Washington, DC; and at the United Nations Secretariat in New York.

To access the peacefulness of the countries the GPI investigates to what extent these countries are involved in ongoing domestic and international conflicts. It also evaluates the level of harmony or discord within a nation. Ten different indicators are set which broadly assess what might be described as a safety and security in society.

23 indicators were used in 2017 to establish each country’s peacefulness score.

The 2019 GPI indicates Iceland, New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark to be the most peaceful and safest countries in the world and Somalia, Afghanistan, Syria, South Sudan, Yemen and Iraq to be the least peaceful.
